DescriptionThe principal neuron of region CA3 of the hippocampus. It forms a single cell body layer. It gives rise to an apical dendritic tree and several basal dendrites, which are covered with spines. The apical shaft has thorny excresences which receive the excitatory glutamatergic synapses of the mossy fibers from the dentate granule cells. The output of the cell is carried in an axon which recurs to pass through the apical dendritic tree before becoming the Shafer collateral which has excitatory glutamatergic synapses on the apical dendrites of CA1 pyramidal neurons. The axon also makes excitatory glutamatergic synapses on the dendrites of the CA3 pyramidal neurons as it passes through them.
